Starting an in-home yoga practice

If you have been thinking about starting your own practice at home, now is the time especially if you are not comfortable going back to a yoga studio yet. Setting up your own special place in your home to practice yoga and meditation is easy and fun. Be creative and set it up so you look forward to spending time in your sacred space. Here is a list of items you might want to procure:

  • Buy a nice yoga mat in a color and thickness of your choice.

  • Props to have on hand - yoga blocks, a yoga strap, blankets and a bolster or pillow. You can improvise if you don't want to purchase all the props when you first begin. Towels can be used in place of blankets for comfort and support. A belt, tie or stretch band can be a good substitute for a yoga strap.

  • Additional items to make it feel more relaxing and inviting; candles, lights, plants, crystals and decor such as pictures of nature.

  • Music can enhance your practice and if you enjoy music then having a small speaker to play music or meditaton can help to set the mood.

  • A few books to refer to for yoga poses, mudras or poems.

Once you have your space all set up, it's time to try it out. Pick some of your favorite poses to practice. Start with a warm-up and maybe a few sun salutations. Let go of worrying about whether or not you are doing it correctly and just move your body in a way that feels good. Keep it fun and interesting, maybe work on one or two poses that you find more challenging. Add on some breathing practices or a restorative pose and maybe a short meditation.
